Pop Culture References in Wizard101 – Dragonspyre

The NPCs of Dragonspyre

Dragonspyre is an ancient, haunted world. Once an advanced society of militaristic wizards and warriors, Dragonspyre had an esteemed Academy rivaling that of the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts in Wizard City. It is the first expansion world to the game and was released four months after the game’s initial release.

This dead world is where Malistaire goes to resurrect his dead wife. Finishing the quests on this world concludes the Malistaire saga of Wizard101. This is a scant list. I honestly do not recall many references and it has been years since I played a wizard through this world. If you know of any Dragonspyre references that I missed, please comment below.

Please note this list does not claim to be every reference these are just the ones I caught or have been made aware of. Many young wizards have contributed to my research for this series of articles. I have undoubtedly missed some references and will happily revise this master list as more come to light. Also this series focuses on the NPCs of Wizard101 and will not attempt to list all references in Quest Names, Spells, or Dialogue.

Brenda J. G. suggests that Katalin Nightseeker could be a reference to either Kaitlan Collins (former host of CNN this Morning) or Kaitlyn Rochelle Dever (Eve Baxter from Last Man Standing). However, since Ms. Collins was still in college when Dragonspyre was released and Ms. Dever didn’t get her breakout role until 2011 (two years after Dragonspyre), I’m going to count this one as unconfirmed.

Brenda J.G. suggests that Oskar Crowfriend could be a reference to Oscar Crawford. However a Google search lists 6 different Oscar Crawfords each of whom could be the reference. Unconfirmed.

  1. Hi, follow up on your post about Dragonspyre on Facebook, Brenda Joyce Griggs. Milos BookWyrm Dragonspyre library possibly refers to Fraternity of Shadows Milos- Mistipedia or Milos Mikeln a journalist, play writer, theatre director and Slovenes writer.

  2. There was also a reference for Milos that’s a developer too but I didn’t know if it was important since he’s a newer addition. I posted about the Loremaster on Facebook in the adult wizard group too and when questing today I’ll see if I can locate more for you, I love your culture posts! Say hi to your precious wife for me and I pray for y’all daily!

  3. I’ve got both on my list.

I’ll be covering these new Dragonspyre ones once I’m through my Mirage list (next Friday?)

Yeah, I’m interested in the Milos referring to a developer.

And thank you for the prayers. They are appreciated.

  4. Tower Archives, Zarathax and the wizards tower. He being a sorcerer, balance, deceives us into helping him activate the crystals and the key to open up the wizard tower. He pretends to be on our side but is using us to get him to the wizards tower, the tower is where wizards came apart to study, get away from the multitudes and to learn more magic as well as crafting runes, Zarathax is under the impression he’s going to rule Dragonspyre. When we confronted him in wizard tower he reveals his intentions and called us stupid lol 😂. A few examples of wizards are Merlin during King Arthur’s reign, wizards and wizard tower are mentioned in RuneScape, I also found references to them in a trilogy of books called Wizard’s Tower 1, 2 and 3 as well as The Lord of the Rings other references to a wizard called Gandalf on Wikipedia, Quora gives a good description and origins of sorcerers in fantasy and mythology.

  5. Katalin NightSeeker located in Tower Archives possibly a reference to Kaitlin Collins Journalist. Reference also could include Kaitlyn Dever currently being cast as Abby in The Last of Us. Oscar CrowFriend the knowledge keeper could be a pop culture reference to Oscar Crawford, writer, publisher, social media.

  6. Brenda,

I’m moving your comment here from the Bible Verse where you commented it.

Hi Steve, on Dragonspyre, Plaza of Conquests and Laszlo StarBlade. Possibly a pop culture reference to Caleb Carr author, his about the author shows extensive military studies and experience including foreign military history.

Another reference could refer to actor Matt Berry as Laszlo Cravensworth, the meaning of Laszlo is glorious ruler. What’s funny this fellow favors our Laszlo lol. Hope you get these I just downloaded the app and I’m still learning it 😂
