31DtaBBC Day 2: 10 Theories About WotC’s Boneheaded Decision

1. The suits at Hasbro actually believe this move will stop piracy.

2. WotC doesn’t want to share D&D profits with anybody.

3. Hasbro is trying to get away from all things electronic because computers are a fad.

4. An Evil Wizard has taken over at WotC.

5. WotC secretly wants to control all places where D&D is available.

6. WotC/Hasbro had a critical failure on their Intelligence role.

7. This isn’t Wizard’s fault this is all a HUGE plot instituted by a disgruntled former employee.

8. Hasbro can’t sell the new 4e D&D-My Little Pony tie-in if .pdfs of older material is still available.

9. The same marketing firm that came up with the SyFy channel told Hasbro/WotC this is sound business strategy.

10. WotC doesn’t want you to play anything but 4e. (Thanks to Berin for this one)

John over @ the Core Mechanic has his own list add those to Greywulf’s 10 below and now we have 30 reasons.

  1. Hey Stev… saw your comment on the 31DBBB Day 2 post and you had me at Vulcan. Even though I don’t know what WotC is, I like your list. I’m a WoW player myself, so I think I get the gist of what you are sayin’.

    The real reason I’m commenting is to say “thanks man” for getting the Star Trekkin’ song stuck in my head. It’s so infectious!

    Live Long and Prosper!

  2. Hmmm… sorry to comment again but I just realised that I hadn’t linked my blog in comments yet. Yours is my first WP comment. 🙂

  3. @Bonemaster – Agreed. I tried to put some serious ones as well as the absurd

    @Ree – not a prob link away 😎
    WotC = Wizards of the Coast, publishers of Dungeons & Dragons. They’ve been making some pretty wierd business decisions recently.

  4. I think all those theories are valid, especially the low intelligence roll, that made me laugh. Unfortunately Wizards is forgetting all about those who have been with them for years and trying to focus on getting new blood with 4e. This leaves no room for gamers who love their thac0 and want to continue their AD&D collection.

  5. 11. “Hey, it’s still April, right? Fooled ya!”

    12. Chris Pramas (head honcho of Green Ronin) is secretly mind-controlling the Leaders of Hasbro into driving their company into the ground, thus guaranteeing Wizards & Warlocks takes over the world. He can do that.

    13. Scott Rouse (AKA “The Godfather of Nice”) made RPGNow an offer they couldn’t refuse. And they refused.

    14. The gnomes made them do it.

    15. 5th Edition is coming, so you don’t need 4e any more, right?

    16. Using torrents is so much easier than buying things. They’re just making it easier for the customer by removing the difficult option. Talk about customer service!

    17. They’ve lost all of their own PDF copies but daren’t tell anyone.

    18. “Torrent? I thought you said to rent! Yeh, we can rent D&D to you. Just sign here.”

    19. Look on the bright side. No more pdfs mean no more need to add the errata to pdfs! Brilliant!

    20. Three words: Kindle, the RPG.

  6. After hearing stories from friends that worked for WotC when they had an Office in Glasgow, Scotland #4 is fast becoming the most likely as far as I’m concerned.

  7. @Trollish – If #10 is the reason, then it’s a completely corporate decision.

    @Greywulf – Thank you for the continuation, Nevets loved #14

    @Bob – and #4 plays right back into #10

  8. “14. The gnomes made them do it.”

    Damn Gnomes!
    The Illuminati and MJ12 are secretly controlled by Gnomes so you must be correct. The Gnomes secretly control secret organizations… that’s how evil they are.

    “15. 5th Edition is coming, so you don’t need 4e any more, right?”
    Don’t say things like that… I’ll have nightmares.

    I personally think someone has been slipping psychotropic drugs into the water supply at WotC HQ and that is why they have all apparently gone nuts. They are having a bad trip.
